FAQs About This Service
Mental Health Evaluations:
Why can I not get a DBQ for a first-time PTSD claim?
Currently, the VA has not made a DBQ publicly available for initial PTSD claims. To ensure veterans still have the necessary medical evidence, we provide an Independent Medical Opinion (IMO) that includes all the key information typically found in a DBQ for an initial PTSD claim.
What if I mentioned a symptom but it wasn't marked on my evaluation?
If a symptom you mentioned wasn't marked or checked off in your evaluation, it's likely because it didn't meet the clinical criteria required for documentation. Our providers assess symptoms based on established medical definitions, which can sometimes differ from how symptoms are described in everyday language.
While you may describe an experience that feels significant or concerning, it may not align with the clinical standards necessary to document it as a symptom for VA purposes. Providers are required to follow those guidelines and generally won't update their findings unless a clear documentation error has occurred.
I'm feeling nervous about my upcoming mental health evaluation. How can I prepare?
It's completely normal to feel nervous before a mental health evaluation. The topics discussed may be personal or difficult, and it's okay to feel uncomfortable. Our psychologists are here to listen to and understand your story, but they don't expect you to go into deep detail about distressing events.
Instead, be prepared to briefly describe what you experienced, how it's affecting you now, and any supporting evidence you may have. A sentence or two is often enough. Our psychologists are trained to present the most important information clearly and concisely, as shorter, focused reports are typically more effective with VA raters.
To help prepare:
Avoid scheduling anything stressful on the day of your appointment.
Consider speaking with a trusted friend, family member, or therapist beforehand.
Prioritize self-care the day of your evaluation.
